Television, its impact on our lives in terms of entertainment, information and communication has only really been surpassed by the internet. At various times it may entertain us, inform us, anger us, bore us and, I suspect, sedate us. There is a fairly strong argument that many of us switch on the television and promptly switch off our minds. That may sound unfair given some of the high quality programmes programs being made, but the bulk of the most popular and watched shows really do suggest that we may indeed be growing dumber.
I guess I should point out before you get the wrong idea – I’m not anti-television, I do have a television and I do watch plenty of television. I absolutely love shows like Lost and 24, though I would be the first to admit that they, particularly 24, have some ridiculous plot twists sometimes that really don’t credit the viewer with much intelligence. No, it’s not this that bothers me. I have a problem with television when it starts to interfere with some of the other great stuff in life, stuff that happened when we used to sit at the dining table and chairs.
TV dinners are my problem. If the chef has put any effort into dinner, then trying to eat it while also trying to watch Jack Bauer from 24 interrogate a suspect is insulting. Any attention to the look of the food is completely wasted as the recipient is clearly trying to eat without taking their eyes off the screen. Appreciating the food fully is impossible while your attention is diverted elsewhere. When food is given this little attention why would the chef put the effort in, night after night, to produce delicious and nutritious food?
If we could just get back into the habit of sitting down at the dining room table and chairs, we might rediscover the enjoyment of dinner time again. It is not meant to be just fuel for our bodies. When we eat well, using variety and healthy ingredients, food becomes a real pleasure. Not only that, but it is something we share as families. Dinner time is a great time for catching up on everyone’s day and a great time for a family to bond and connect in general. When someone asks you how your day went, but stays focused on their television set while you tell them, does that feel right to you? I guess you know my view now – let’s eat at the dining room table and chairs again.
