Have you seen those home security advice shows on television? There is one where they take an ex-criminal, show him round some volunteer’s house and then challenge him to break into it. What is incredible is the amount of times he is able to do just that, and get away clean. He is then introduced to the startled volunteer who he coaches on how to avoid a break-in in the future.
What becomes clear from watching the program is how the mind of a burglar works. As in nature, what a predator is looking for is the easiest target. Time and time again it is the volunteer who makes it easy for the burglar to go about his business. By forgetting to make sure of simple things, like not leaving windows opened, and not leaving ladders and other helpful props that enable the criminal to gain access to the house, the home owner makes themselves an ideal target.
One very cheap and simple way to improve home security is to install some patio lights. Motion sensors can be bought separately and fitted to the lights, meaning any late night intruder will be lit up on approaching your personal property. Most burglars being predatory in nature they will most likely move on to more obviously easy pickings. At the very least, they will think twice. That, in the majority of cases, can be enough.
So, you have your lights, have fitted a sensor and, actually yes, you are sleeping a little better. That isn’t your only gain. You have now added a little magic to your patio. Summer evenings spent outside are far more enjoyable when you create the right atmosphere. Patio lights help you do just that. Enjoying them at your repose in the patio, before heading off to bed for a sounder night’s sleep, you might marvel briefly at how much difference even small and simple changes can make to you.
