The corner desk is quite possibly the next big thing… These days it is becoming more and more common for people to work at home. With the downturn in the global economy and rising unemployment many people have resorted to starting up small home businesses to try and earn a little (or a lot of) money. Not only are there an increased number of home businesses running today, but there has also been a shift towards home working for regular employees.
With the advances in communications and wireless technology over the last few years, it has never been easier to access important files remotely, or log in to a conference call with colleagues who could be located anywhere in the world. With these changes it has made sense for employers to facilitate more flexible work patterns for their employees who benefit in several ways:
- Time. No longer will there be a need to crawl along in the car during rush hour, or wait an extra hour in the cold because your train has been canceled.
- Money. Money for travel, money to pay for child minders, money spent on expensive lunches. This all adds up and losing those small daily expenses can make quite a difference to your wallet.
- Health. Without traffic, the rush to get to the office by nine am, the pressure t complete everything by five pm and the hurried lunch, the employee reduces their overall stress levels considerably.
These factors all contribute to encouraging well being in the employee, as this can be reflected in an improved work ethic and better results, which leads to success and more well being for the employee.
The employer also benefits by way of reduced overheads:
- Rent. If a smaller office can now be used then savings can be made.
- Heat, light and air conditioning. All these costs add up for the employer.
- Security and Facilities Management. These extra staffing costs go with running any office.
So, there are many benefits. The tricky part is making sure that increased working at home doesn’t impact too much on keeping the home a happy one. A corner desk can be an efficient, neat way of keeping all the work materials organised, and provide a place for work quite apart from family life. With a decent computer corner desk and a little discipline it should be possible to enjoy the many benefits of working from home, and still do a great job.
